[edit] Limitations

Greenphone is shipped with SDIO not enabled. This means it can not deliver enough current to host a wifi card trough the SD slot. Although, Trolltech has done this by using a SD wifi card with an adapter. The greenphones has to be modified to do this. Trolltech has no instructions yet how to do this, hopefully we will get this information. Trolltech also tells you have to specify when ordering that you want SDIO enabled!

[edit] SDIO miniSD wifi

  • [spectec] is a suplier of miniSD wifi cards. This is not tested with greenphone yet, but there are kernel modules for 2.4.18 working on samsung PDA.
  • [Go Wi-Fi] is the current wifi sd card trolltech is using. They have kernel drivers for this, but has not released them yet.

[edit] Specs

  • miniSD memory card is using 60mAh for write process. [miniSD] page 3
  • spectec miniSD wifi is using avg. current of 90~100mAh for transive [sdw825]
  • Go Wi-Fi has a peak of 265 mAh - [datasheet]

[edit] What we need

  • Need to enable SDIO in our greenphones to add som current
  • Buy a wifi miniSD card (50$)
  • Write some kernel modules (if none of the suppliers dont offer this)

[edit] Trolltech's answer

I have tried to get some answers from Trolltech if there is a possibility to send in my Greenphone to get a modification, to enable SDIO. Also i have asked if the current from the phone is enough for the available miniSD wifi cards on the marked. Summerized this is the answer i got:

  • Trolltech have created a limited edition Greenphones that does in fact produce enough power to support a Wifi card.
  • Trolltech have one driver provided to them by a third party vendor that supports a SDIO card from Serial I/O.
  • Because it is a SDIO card they need to have a mini-SDIO to SDIO converter card, which is very hard to find.
  • Trolltech has a lot of issues getting robust behavior from this ad-hoc Wifi solution.
  • Trolltech believe one issue is that the Greenphone comes with a 2.4 kernel, which we know is rather old.
  • They would like to upgrade the Greenphone to a 2.6 kernel. This is not controlled by Trolltech, but by the phone manufacture.
  • The only real Network choice we have other then GSM/GPRS is to do networking is over the mini-usb connector
